Acidic or Alkaline? Check Any Food by Its PRAL
Sour does not mean acid-forming. The PRAL shows what a food does after digestion. Here you find the answer for every food in the Basentracker database, with its value, a typical serving and an everyday tip.
Negative PRAL: alkalizing after digestion.
PRAL below −0.5
PRAL close to zero: hardly shifts your acid-base balance.
PRAL between −0.5 and +0.5
Positive PRAL: acid-forming after digestion.
PRAL above +0.5
Acidic by taste, alkaline by PRAL
When people ask whether a food is acidic, they often mean its pH, or whether it causes heartburn. The PRAL answers a different question: what is left after digestion, and how much acid your kidneys have to handle. That is why foods with an acidic pH can still be alkalizing: lemon −4.0, tomato −4.2, black coffee −2.3 per 100 g. The PRAL gives one number per food, calculated the same way for all of them, so you can compare foods and add up whole meals.

Every page shows the PRAL per 100 g and per serving, the rating as alkaline, neutral or acid-forming, variants such as raw, cooked or dried, and what to do with it in everyday life. The values come from the same database the Basentracker app uses.
